Interesting question, Marc. My emphasis on amateurism has more to do with WHY we run than WHAT we get ($) WHEN we run. Wikipedia defines amateurism thus:

Amateurism (from Fr. amateur "lover of," from O.Fr., from L. amatorem nom. amator, "lover,"). As a value system, amateurism elevates things done with self-interest above those done for pay (i.e., professionalism). The term has particular currency in its usage with regard to sports. By definition amateur sports require participants to participate without remuneration.

In other words, we run because we LOVE it!

yes, a little pay day is nice every now and then (don't worry, Diana, your day will come) but the future of CAC - individually or collectively - is not to be determined by money.

Joan, I love it! I think there are not enough clubs for people like us and I hope that USATF considers that. Sadly, Marc, I may one of the "bastions of amateurism" as I keep trying to win prize money only to do a race a year or two too late (as in, the race gets exceedingly fast and I am no longer a contender). One day, one day...

Just saw this...somehow missed it before. I do like this, though I do not think we should have to apologize for what we are. By the way, what exactly makes us a bastion of amateurism? I wonder this because most of us have won prize money at races here and there. I used to think of myself as an amateur runner, but then a fellow runner told me that I am about as professional as a marathoner can get in the US (meaning that it's practically impossible to only be a marathoner). I am not sure that's true, but it's worth thinking about.

Joan I think this is great. In the South I found there are not so many running group opportunities as there are up North and I think that having an "elite" status option and team for those in the Triangle area is so important, considering the depth of talent down there coming out of the schools is high and without an abundant running world to enter into can sadly get lost, discouraged, or leave the area when they graduate. The potential for everyone is there for elite status athletes and I think you are right in saying another cycle because some have reached it, some are on the cusp of it, and others are almost there because they are just coming in. High quality running and racing takes time to build up, but CAC is surely building it. A collective group aiming towards such high goals gives the support needed and offers the focus demanded for such pursuits. Without CAC this would somewhat "secretly" exist in the area, which would be unfortunate for again the possible talent that can come out of that area.

Impressive debut marathons. They must have a good coach (as well as training partners).
