Plantar Fascitis

Posted in Jeuland's Musings at 7:16 pm by Marc

Oh Woe! Anybody have some useful tricks for overcoming plantar fascitis? I’ve gotten new shoes (yesterday) and picked up some Superfeet at Victor’s suggestion, but I am open to experimentation at this point if anyone know good remedies for this. I’ve had it before and it usually works itself out, but this spell is lasting longer than usual.

Sleeping with that special boot that keeps your foot at more of a right angle always got rid of mine. I would highly recommend that.

Apparently it doesn’t work for some, but it got rid of mine quickly.

Anybody have a ’special’ boot I could borrow?

Are you sure it’s plantar fascitis? Have you had a trainer or doctor look at it? Could it be that you let your shoes get worn excessively and the misalignment of the foot’s mechanics is causing the problem? New shoes would not be a quick fix but rather a possible remedy but if the shoes were the problem then the new shoes will eventually return you to your original, pain-free foot alignment and you will be back on the road again. Have you asked Coach Mabe about it?

Marc - I suffered with this malady for over a year and ended up not running for the last 11 months of that time. Not running helped at first but then it just stayed the same. The boot did not help me. The last straw was a 2 mile walk on the strip in Las Vegas that had me limping around like arthritic 90 year old man. Finally, I went to see a chiropractor who practiced Active Release Therapy. Long story short, I was running again in 3 weeks and I have been fine ever since. I did my therapy in Texas but I’m sure you can find someone there who can help you. If you don’t know, Active Release Therapy or ART is basically a deep tissue massage combined with a lot of movement that works out all the “crud” and, for me, sped the recovery dramatically.

Thanks for all your comments. So far I have had the most success with wearing Superfeet, and with massaging my heal pretty hard (which hurts but pays off). It’s lingering but I think I am getting better, and was able to go long this weekend.

Marc, find a golf ball and when you’re studying/reading/watching tv/just being sedentary, roll your foot over it. Make sure when you get up in the morning you massage your foot before you step on it to make sure it’s warm and stretched out. Good luck! I wouldn’t have had any idea seeing you at practice on Wednesday. :-)
