itchin!

well, i still have another week of down time, but i am already reading, thinking and plotting about how to get faster. I went for a three mile run, and let’s just say the mind recovers more quickly than the body. i realize that my last post was a little negative, but rest assured that i am over the slight disappointment of the marathon and looking toward my next training block. though it has not been announced yet, i have read and heard rumors that the 2012 qualifying window will open in 2009, meaning i can try for a qualifier pre-residency. it might mean not running track (or at least not being track focused), so I will have to think hard about it. anyway, i am itching to get back, but i will enjoy another few days of fat week.

Hope you’ve enjoyed the fat week B - it’s been way too long since we’ve run together or even hung out, looking forward to the next opportunity to do so..

As someone who reads the blog, I was wondering if you and Tyler had been using your Forerunner 405’s and what you thought of them? I am looking to replace my Polar RS400sd that was lost to Lake Crabtree during the Triangle Triathlon yesterday, and a newer, smaller GPS seems to be the way to go, if it works. Thanks.

Hi Chris. Personally, I love my 405. While the exact accuracy of the GPS (pace and distance) is debatable, I think that it’s right on as long as you’re not running on single track trails that change directions frequently - where the perceived effort and pace don’t match up. I wear it and use the GPS on every training run and have rarely thought that what it was telling me was inaccurate. What I like to do is have it auto-lap every mile, so I get a beep that let’s me know it has lapped and can check what the time was for that mile. I also have it set up to show me what my average pace for the run is thus far, and what the pace for the current mile is. You will get frustrated if you try to use the instantaneous pace because it jumps all over the board. I also got a heart rate monitor with mine, which is pretty nice if you want to make sure you keep your run at a certain effort, but I find I don’t use that much any more. The size isn’t bad at all - when I first opened it I thought it was a bit bigger than I expected, but after using it a little while it seems just like a normal sized watch. One thing I don’t like is that the website Garmin has for you to upload your workouts onto has fairly nice features but is extremely slow. I think the servers might be overseas or something. Well, enough nerd talk for me, the net is that I’m very happy with mine and think it’s worth the $

Thanks for the feedback. Four people in my multisport club already have it and, aside from the little things that people have mentioned (the instantaneous pace being the main one), everyone has highly recommended it. I also used the heart rate on my previous watch a lot, as right now I find it really useful since I don’t handle the heat well at all, so when I run now my pace might be slow, but the HR lets me see how much harder I’m having to work to stay cool and compare between hot and warm days, so I’ll be getting the model with the HRM built into it as well.
