Brent’s coming run

Posted in Jeuland's Musings at 10:35 pm by Marc

I have spent some really key training moments with Brent the past 6-8 months, and so I would like to lift up his coming race for a moment. I know that plenty of other CAC teammates are racing this weekend, and looking for fast times, and I do not mean to ignore those imminent achievements by focusing on his marathon in this post. I will be eager to hear about those other results too!

It is telling that Brent was out on his bike during our workout today, helping us through our kilometer repeats on a challenging road loop. I struggled in my second set, but Victor and Tyler kept me going initially, and then Brent picked me up on the final interval. Brent has been steady and dependable on a suite of long runs this summer; the ones that Joan likes to call the “buzzsaw”. I think we both alternate pushing one another in those efforts, and I will miss the companionship and strength he lends to them over the remainder of October.

Whatever ugly tricks the weather decides to play on Sunday in Chicago (predictions of record highs), I am confident that Brent will run a solid race. For one, he’s endured the North Carolina summer, and run some pretty amazing long runs on humid mornings throughout. The other thing is that the time he runs may not ultimately mean that much. The great thing about this marathon is that everyone doing it will have to face the same weather conditions. You have to be lucky (and amazing) to run like Gebreselassie did last weekend in Berlin, but you do not have to be lucky to run well against the field on any given day, in any given race. Join me in wishing good luck to Brent!
