Ah, the crisp mornings…

After an August to remember, September has already started off much better. It may still be dry, but at least our garden is no longer being fried. Even with high temperatures this week, the early hours of the day just feel different.

This weekend was almost my last really long run before the Trials - 24 miles (there’s one more 140 minute run about a month from today). I will now gradually start to shorten them and focus on running segments of the long run hard. Backing off too much on running time has never done much for my training. Altering the effort has. Fast pace work interspersed into a long run exhilarates me, and it has been hard at times to run my two+ hour workouts in June, July and August at a steady pace.

I probably should not mentally switch into this next phase of my training just yet, but it is hard not to. I really still have another week and a half and then will race in Philadelphia in a race I want to use to test, test, test. I have no idea right now what my work this summer will yield, and this is my first real opportunity to gauge that.
