Back in Chapel Hill
I have had an interesting couple of weeks of training. This past week has been among the steamiest I remember since moving back to the US from West Africa in 2004. The fact that I was in DC did not make it much better, although I guess it was a little cooler up there, especially late in the week. I very much enjoy reading and knowing that others (in CAC and outside) are suffering the heat along with me; there is a sense of solidarity and support that results from the shared and written experience.
In spite of the temperatures and the busy week I had working a more regimented 8:30-6 pm schedule while in DC (as opposed to my more elastic graduate student schedule in Chapel Hill), my running came back together. I had really suffered the previous week, and Joan wisely dispatched a missive telling me to cool it. I am very grateful for her moderating voice, since I never really know when it is ok to take a day (or a few) off.
Today at Umstead, I could only marvel at how good it felt to really be running again…

Were you not melting in that run? I love running at Umstead and can understand your bliss especially after cooling it for a bit. Some one once told me that a true athlete knows how to rest, but it is the hardest thing to do. I too have such issues with that knowing when is the right time and the needed time. But, I must say having a legitimate excuse or actually the horrid running weather has made these last two weeks of elliptical bounded-ness okay because I know i wouldn’t really want to have to run outside…then again there is always the treadmill, but….

Yes, I agree that the treadmill is thoroughly unexciting…I hope that you are doing well with the elliptical!
