General Training
I’ve sat down over half a dozen times to write something perfect.
Well, forget it. I’m just going to write about my general training. My training has been unbroken since I moved to Carrboro in the fall, a fact I have to remind myself of daily. Sure, there was that incident with my IT Band during the winter – but I cross-trained every day. In fact, I bounced back so quickly from those few terrible hobbling weeks that it’s hard to believe I was ever injured at all. That was months ago.
I’m a strong believer in “relative ease.” Most of my training philosophy (if I have one) stems from that. I like to run fast, but I try desperately hard to keep my body relaxed while doing it. I also like to run harder during the middle and latter half of my workouts. I hope to one day be able to kick from a long way out in my races, and this training technique seems to be the best way for me to achieve this.
In a nutshell, I run roughly 70 miles a week, swim 2 or 3 times, complete some core strength work, and occasionally do some drills and strides on the grass. Thankfully, I have found a way to mesh my working life, my family life and my running life into one giant knotted ball. I’m afraid to mess with it lest the whole thing unravel.
With the racing season fully upon me, I’m excited to round into peak form and set some new personal best times. This weekend I will be competing in the Kip Keino Mile in Ithaca, New York (my home state). My dad and sister will be there, as will my high school coaches, Gayle & Jack Wilson. They say I run like a girl: too pretty. Well, there won’t be anything “pretty” about the last lap of my race - when I will be entering the depths of utter exhaustion. My goal is to run a sub-3:59 mile this weekend, earn my way to U.S. Outdoor Nationals with that time, and come home with a grin.

Good luck this weekend! Your writing is fine, don’t wait for perfect. Your running is great. I thought the film of your last lap at Penn was beautiful. I’m sure NY will be the same and you’ll return with that grin.
